Tranmere Rovers vs. Chesterfield

Prenton Park

1st of December

3.00pm

FA Cup Round 2 Tranmere v Chesterfield.

The FA Cup moves into the 2nd Round. the prize is the possibility of being drawn against a top Premiership team in the 3rd Round. The Spireites couldn't have got a much harder draw, a team away from home that are top of League 1. The furthest Tranmere have gone in the FA Cup is the Quarter Finals, which they reached 3 times, in 1999/2000, 2001/2002 and 2003/2004. Chesterfield reached the Semi Final in 1997.

On paper Tranmere are overwhelming favourites against a mid table League 2 side. Luckily for the Spireites the game is played on grass. Tranmere will be without their top scorer Jake Cassidy who has already scored 11 goals this season. He has been denied by his Club Wolves, they will also be without Liam Palmer, also denied by his club Sheffield Wednesday. It's the FA Cup were form guides go out of the window and it's all on the day.

Vital Quotes:

Ronnie Moore speaking to the media said: 'I've seen the DVDs and we had them watched on Saturday. They've played well in some games and fluked others which is a sign of a good team that you win games when you're not playing well. It's the FA Cup and the league form goes out of the window. It's about the 90 minutes and I like to think we can cause them one or two problems. '

Paul Cook talking to the media said: 'This is a game we're looking forward to and I think we can win, that's we'll be going there to do. Tranmere will expect to win, but so do I - so something has to give. '

Tranmere Rovers Team News:

Top scorer Jake Cassidy (Wolves) and Liam Palmer (Sheffield Wed) have been denied by their clubs to play. On loan Ben Gibson is available but struggling to be fit.

Player to watch: James Wallace

James Wallace will their danger man, he came to the club last season on loan from Everton. Tranmere signed him at the beginning of the season. Ronnie Moore said: 'He's got bags of energy, tackles well, can pick out a pass and has goals in him too. He turned down some big clubs to come to us which shows how much he enjoyed it here last season. It's a big signing for the club and I think we've got a very good player on our hands. He's a Leader, a talker and he'll make an excellent Captain for the club.'

Chesterfield Team News:

Ben Dickenson as been ruled out by Brighton. Chris Atkinson has gone back to Huddersfield. Mark Randall (shin) is still doubtful.

Player to watch: Marc Richards

Striker Marc Richards is settling in at the club now after being out injured, he has scored 2 goals in his last 2 games for the Spireites. He also has good midfielders supporting him, supply him with the chance and he will score.

Match Facts & Stats

At Home against the Spireites Tranmere have won 24, drawn 8, losing 15, scoring 77 goals conceding 52. Tranmere have the won the last 3 meetings at Prenton Park, although the Spireites did win there in the 2003-4 season, a 3-2 win with Glynn Hurst scoring 2 goals and an goal from Jones.

Ref Watch:

Andy Madley will in charge of the match, the older brother of fellow league Referee Robert Madley. Andy is one of the most lenient refs in the Football League in 15 matches he has given out 33 yellows and 2 reds.

Match Prediction:

My heart says a draw, although my brain says a win for Tranmere. It's the FA Cup so anything could happen, I feel if the Spireites play at their best they could run Tranmere close and possibly pull off a shock.

Next Fixtures:

Another tough game, this time away at Port Vale, who are currently 2nd in League 2. Marc Richards comes up against his old team, hopefully he will get a good reception from the home fans.
