Spireites Take On Matlock In The Senior Cup.

Spireites Take On Matlock In The Senior Cup.

Matlock Town were formed 130 years ago and are currently 15th in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League. They are currently managed by Mark Atkins the former Premier League title winner, who played a big part in helping Blackburn win the title.

Their most successful period was probably the mid seventies, in 1975 they reached the final of the FA Trophy beating Scarborough 4-0 at Wembley. They were managed by former England and Sheffield Wednesday Centre back Peter Swan. It was a remarkable achievement for the club. In 1976/77 they reached the third round of the FA Cup and on the way they pulled off a massive Cup shock by beating eventual Third Division Champions Mansfield 5-2 at Field Mill. Their run ended when they lost 5-1 at Carlisle.

In 1978 they won the NPL Greenhalls Cup at Maine Road beating Boston United 3-0. By winning the Trophy they qualified for the prestigious Anglo Italian Non League Tournament in 1979. They lost 2-1 to both Chieti and Pisa in Italy, but beat Juniorcasale and Cremonese 2-0 at home and narrowly missed out on the final.

The Gladiators have a few familiar faces in their ranks, Gareth Davies and Ben Algar both former Spireites. Oscar Radford recently had a trial with the Spireites, playing in a few reserve games for the club. James Lukic the Nephew of former Arsenal Keeper John is the fans favourite. The Captain has played around 600 matches for the club. He signed for the Gladiators as a 16 year old in 1998. To show that much loyalty at this level is remarkable, no wonder he is very popular with the fans on and off the pitch.

The Spireites field a very youthful squad for tonight's fixture, the line-up: Barrington, Slack, Clarke, Scully, Broadhed, Whitaker, Wafula, Hewitt, Bowland, Hazel, Fereday

Subs Mason, Noel, Mathers, Brock, Fereday.

It's £7 for Adults

£5 for OAP's and children over the age of 12

£2 for children aged 12 and under.
