Ernie Moss got 32% of the votes, 2nd Jack Lester 27%, 3rd Alan Birch 12%.
Striker Ernie Moss was born in Chesterfield and came through the Youth ranks to establish himself as a fans favourite. He had 3 spells with the club helping the Spireites twice win the League Division 4 title in 1970 and 1985. He scored in all competitions a total of 192 goals for the Spireites.
He made 469 League appearance for the Spireites scoring an incredible club record of 162 League goals. I can't see anybody ever breaking that record and in total he scored 245 goals from 749 league games for a total of 9 different clubs. The total of his League appearance puts him in the top 20 on the all time list.
Described by football historian Jeff Kent as a 'wholehearted striker'. He always posed an aerial threat and scored many of his goals by towering over defenders and directing the ball into the net. A big man he was more a gentle giant then a dirty player. He never scored any of his goals from the penalty spot, the only one he did take he missed in a testimonial.
He said about himself: 'For me competing was all about the pride and dignity of honest endeavour, - and winning wasn't about riches and rewards. It was about preserving ones sporting integrity, it was about honour'.
A true gentleman and a true Spireite Legend.
A big thanks to everyone that took part in the poll.
